Today, I read in the newspaper that you can travel from Trier to Metz in France without changing the train. The trip takes less than 90 min. To Luxemburg, it takes less than an hour. If you go for a day trip on a weekend you can take the so called SaarLorLux-Ticket. It costs 18 Euros for the first person and 9 Euros for additional persons (up to 5 people can travel on the same ticket). I think that's a nice new option for a day trip.
